Today I

Went to the Farmers Market

Sometimes Northern California is exactly what you expect it to be. Skateboarding 40-year-olds and bike-riding hipsters abound in Sacramento. So do farmers markets.

I’ve been to several markets since we’ve lived here. They pop up around parks and in parking lots all spring and summer long. This one, however, is huge. And under a highway. Yep, you can get all the organic fruits, fresh veggies, and corn-fed beef you want. If you don’t mind the exhaust fumes.

Honestly though, it wasn’t that bad. And we ended up seeing lots of fun things you won’t find in regular grocery stores. Now, I have to go find a recipe for those tiny carrots

Today I

Warded Off Alzheimer’s

Crossword style.

Somehow I managed to talk my husband into doing crosswords with me this week. I mean, it is free right? They come to the front door every morning with the paper. And I’m 97.3 percent certain they make you smarter.

The rule is that he has to write. (And he uses ink because he’s a rebel.) He knows that if I write, I’ll try to include him on every question. “You know two plus two is four. Just write it in!”  Yes, sir.

When he writes, he’ll fill in what he knows and asks me the rest. Plus, it distracts me from whatever mundane chore I’m doing (folding laundry, ironing, etc.) Win-win.

Today I

Went to the Gym

I wouldn’t typically count this as an outstanding activity except that it has been a long time. I still have two more weeks before I can really workout (have to get the doctor’s approval first), but at least I went.

I felt a bit ridiculous as I was walking a 20-minute mile on a treadmill. I live across the street from a beautiful park with a 1.1 mile loop around it. But at the gym, I get to watch Battlestar Gallactica and 24. And I don’t have to fight state employees for sidewalk space. Or look good.

Today I

Booked a Flight for a September Vacation

To North Carolina to be precise. We’ll be spending half a week in the Outer Banks then the rest of the week in Charlotte. Some friends of ours want to move to Charlotte and would like advice from us about where to go (since we used to live there). The hubs decided that if we were flying across the country there needed to be at least a day or two on the beach to count as a vacation.

Now, I get to spend a month or two planning fun things to do, four months exercising my butt off, and four months dreading flying with an eleven-month old.

P.S. Kayak.com is awesome.

Today I

Went to the Eye Doctor

Yep.

I thought I could just “sleep it off,” but that wasn’t the case. I woke up at 3:30 and could barely open my eyes. So after an hour of phone calls to Kaiser and our optometrist as well as a discussion of the pros and cons of an ER visit, I decided to go back to bed.

Fortunately, I got a call from the doctor the minute they opened and was seen at an early appointment.

But because of the short night, I decided to spend the rest of the day clearing out my DVR. The fun way. In all fairness, this served a dual purpose. I’ll be cancelling my cable soon so I had to catch up on everything before I lose it. That’s productive, right?

Bonus activity: Playing with Max's new tooth!

Today I

Got Poked in the Eye

“The greatest job you’ll ever love.” “It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.” Isn’t that what they say?

Getting poked in the eye might not technically be an activity, but it certainly brings all others to a halt. While fighting a nap, Max managed to lunge toward me - grubby hands out - and stick a finger right in the corner of my eye. I’m talking deep – between eyeball and socket. Argh.

It pretty much ended my day. I went to bed early.
